Featured in the novel Matthew's Rise is Caddo Lake. It is a natural 25,000 acre lake in northwest Louisiana and eastern Texas. The lake was the site of the Caddo Indians in earlier times, thus the name. During steamboat years, it was a path from Louisiana into eastern Texas. It is known for water sports and fishing today.
Cypress trees with their cypress knees (that are really roots jutting above the water) can be found in many places around Caddo Lake, especially along the shore.
The Caddo Indians lived in East Texas as well as Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. The Texas Beyond History site has an interesting activity to complete using their website. (Grades 4 and 7)
